Fun facts about lions!

Why do male lions have manes and females don't?

Some studies show that female lions even prefer darker coloured manes to bigger manes. So scientists now think that a lion's big puffy mane probably isn't there for protection. Instead, we think the mane, and especially its colour, helps the boy lions show the girl lions how healthy and strong they are.

Can female lions grow manes?

It's very rare for female lions to sport a mane. The case of the lioness with the mystery mane has been solved, thanks to veterinarians at the UT College of Veterinary Medicine. Last year, Bridget, an 18-year-old female lion at the Oklahoma City Zoo, started growing a mane!

Leaping lions.

 Leaping lions

Lions are part of the cat family. They use their wee to create a border.

What they eat.

Female lions go hunting for medium size animals like zebras, deer and wild beasts. Their groups are called prides. They have up to 30 lions in a pride.

Their roar.

Both male and female roar. You can hear their roar up to 8 kilometers away. They start with long, deep roars followed by short, faster ones. lions make other noises. They can meaw, hiss and snarl, like a cat, but louder.

What they look like.

Male lions are much bigger than female lions, and they have a bigger mane/hair which covers their head, neck and stretchers underneath their belly.

Lion cubs have light coloured spots on their fur when their born. These fade away as they grow up. The spots help them camouflage when their young.

Cross country

On Wednesday it was cross  country, and I had to run outside of the normal boundaries.

1 k long and I came 1st place!

By the time I was half way, I felt very tired. At the end I speed up really fast!

After the run my throat felt really dry so we went and got a big drink.

When cross country was over we said

nice things about other people and how they did.

I said Rose did a great job because she was right behind me.

After that it was the end of the day and every went home.
